The Cordis Hotel in Auckland was transformed for a night of Pacific colour and glamour recently, as the Pasifika Medical Association charity ball was held for an education fund to provide study awards to Pacific secondary and tertiary students for a career in health.

Launched last year, the charity ball and auctions help to fund study awards and provide opportunities for a Pacific-based Doctor or a Nurse to undertake an international short course and study tour.

SouthSeas Healthcare were among the supporters who gathered to raise money and support the efforts of the Pasifika Medical Association.

The Pasifika Medical Association is a multidisciplinary Non-Governmental Charitable Organisation with more than 3,000 members in New Zealand and across the Pacific region. The Association has been championing excellence in healthcare and practice throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands since 1996.

In addition to raising funds, it was also a networking evening for Pasifika health workers, colleagues and friends, bringing them together and celebrating each other’s achievements over the past year.

Pasifika Medical Association CEO Debbie Sorensen says the Association has spent more than twenty years fostering and championing excellence in healthcare services for Pacific peoples, encouraging and mentoring Pacific people to become health professionals, and training and organising Pacific based health workers to help out with relief work when disaster strikes.

“This is a sign of the determination and strength of our members that PMA has made such steady and meaningful progress since those distant days in 1996 and that we remain relevant as an organisation.”

“The mentoring and training we have facilitated not just for health services, but also training people for disaster relief in some Pacific countries has been very satisfying and a source of pride too for the people on the ground in those countries that they can be the first responders in their countries”.

It was a fun evening and a chance for many to reflect on where the Association has been and how far they have come over the past twenty years, and a chance to push ahead again.

SouthSeas Healthcare would like to congratulate all the recipients, their families and the efforts of the Pasifika Medical Association in staging an incredible charity and auction event to support Pacific doctors and nurses to develop their careers so they can better serve their communities.
