Well Child Service

Well Child is a free health service available to all children living in NZ from birth to 4 years old. The Well Child service has three important components:

  1. Health education: supporting parents by providing health information, to help gain knowledge and skills to respond appropriately to the child’s needs at the different stages of development

  2. Reassuring parents: so the child/children are developing normally through growth and development assessment, informing them of services available for any health concerns and maintaining a healthy lifestyle

  3. Providing continuous care and support: helping parents to identify areas of assistance for themselves while they care for their children and connecting them to other community services for support

There are eight core home visits for children over four years, completing a full child assessment each time. Additional visits may be provided, when identifying needs in smoking mums, failure to grow and gain weight, breastfeeding issues, safe sleep and sudi.
