Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUDI)

What is SUDI?

Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUDI) is when a baby dies in an unexpected way and often, initially unexplained. Approximately 60 – 70 babies die suddenly in their sleep in New Zealand every year. Thinking of SUDI can be frightening, especially for new parents.

SUDI is an infant-centred wrap around model of care that has flexibility to extend support to the infants, parents and whanau when required. Such as:

• Building capacity to enable whanau to navigate health, social services and ensuring a safe and healthy home environment for the infants.

• Education on best ways to protect infant from SUDI.

• This service facilitates SUDI core, starting in the trimester of pregnancy and for at least the first six months of life.
